As the days are getting noticeably longer, most of us long to get out and do something in the fresh air—play a sport, go for a walk, or do something active and positive! There are two upcoming local events where you can do something positive, and you can certainly be active before or after.
On Friday, March 13, 2015, the portable passport machine will be at the offices of the Honorary Consulate. Anyone who needs to apply for or renew a Finnish passport is encouraged to make an appointment. This will probably be the only time this year the machine will be in San Diego; individuals renewing their passports later in the year will need to travel to the Consulate General in Los Angeles or the Embassy in Washington, DC. Interested individuals should call Francisco Soto at (619) 236-9202 or via e-mail: francisco@mautino.org. At present, there are openings in the late morning or afternoon. The Consulate is located in downtown at 1059 10th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 (on 10th Avenue between C Street and Broadway). There are parking meters on the street ($1.25/hour) or a parking lot next door ($10.00 flat rate).
On Saturday April 11, 2015, advance voting for the Parliamentary elections will be held in San Diego. The advance polling station will be at the Hose of Finland (officially, 2212 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101) between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Votes cast in San Diego will be sent to Finland to be included in the official count. Voting in Finland will be on Sunday, April 19th. Voters can also appear at other locations, the closest to us being the Consulate General in Los Angeles. Information on other locations (including dates and times) can be found at the Embassy website: www.finland.org.
There is an exciting opportunity for young aspiring journalists from the West Coast. Applications for the Foreign Correspondents’ Programme 2015 are being accepted between now and March 15th. Winning journalists will participate in a three week program starting August 10th. Travel, hotel and most meals are covered. The program is open to aspiring journalists from across the United States, but the sponsors are especially interested in individuals from the West Coast. Applicants must have some media experience (including social media) and be born between 1986 and 1995. Further information and application forms can be found at the Embassy website: www.finland.org.
