Fun Facts about Finland

  • In the far north section of Finland the sun does not set for 73 days during midsummer, and during the winter season the sun does not rise for about 51 days.
  • Finland is also where visitors will find over 1.8 million saunas, of which nearly 500 are traditional smoke saunas.
  • Finland was the first country in the world to allow all women to vote.
  • Finland is the home country of Santa, sauna and moomins!
  • The world-famous Nokia is a Finnish company.
  • Finland probably holds the world record for hosting world championships.
  • Finland was one of the last regions in Europe to adopt Christianity.
  • Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, however, English is widely spoken in the country. An interesting fact about the Finish language is that has 15 cases and no prepositions.
  • Avantouinti, literally known as ‘ice hole swimming’ is one of the national hobbies of Finland, when people for a few minutes swim in the large opening cut through the ice of a frozen lake or sea.
  • The most popular Finn in the world is Santa Clause, whose office is waiting for you in the North of Finland on the Arctic Circle.
  • One and two cent coins are not used in Finland and the price is rounded.
  • The amount you are fined for speeding on the Finland roads depends on the amount you earn. Recently, a man, who earned 7 million Euros in Finland, was charged 116,000 Euros.

Basics about Finland

Total area: 130,128 square miles, of which 10% is water and 69% forest; Europe’s largest archipelago, including the semi-autonomous province of Åland

Population: 5.56 million (2022). 

Capital: Helsinki (595,000), about 1.3 million people live in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

GDP: In 2021, Finland’s GDP per capita was 49,000 euros

Currency: The Finnish currency unit is the euro. Finland was one of the 12 EU countries that started using the euro in 2002.

Languages: Finland has two official languages: Finnish (91.5%) and Swedish (5.5%). Another official indigenous minority language is Sami (0.03%)

Religion: Lutheran (65 %) and Orthodox (about 1.1%)

Neighboring Countries: Sweden, Norway, Russia


President: The head of state is the President of the Republic. The President is elected for a six-year term by direct popular vote. The president for the current term (until the elections start on January 2024) is Mr Sauli Niinistö.

Parliament: Parliament consists of one chamber with 200 members. The members are elected for a four-year term by direct popular vote under a system of proportional representation.

Climate: The climate of Finland is marked by cold winters and fairly warm summers. In summer the temperature quite often rises to +70 Fahrenheit or more and occasionally goes close to +85 in southern and eastern parts of the country. In winter, temperatures of -5 Fahrenheit are not uncommon in many areas. Finnish Lapland invariably has the lowest winter temperatures.

The House of Finland (HOF) is a social and non-profit organization. HOF is one of the houses organized under House of Pacific Relations (HPR). HOF promotes and cultivates Finnish culture and traditions. It promotes social activities among its members and provides a meeting possibilities for Finnish people and friends of Finland.

The House of Finland is a Chapter of Finlandia Foundation National.
